With the Tour de France starting tomorrow it’s time to take a look at the odds for the overall race, the points classification, the mountains classification and the best young rider. 2015 Tour de France Betting odds
Overall winner
This is where all the action happens and most fans that put just one bet on will put it on the overall winner, this year is the closest odds between the first four riders I have seen for a number of years, probably since 2006 the first year after the Lance Armstrong wins (or non-wins). How So? Well last year as an example saw Chris Froome start at 2.00, Alberto Contador start at 2.80, and eventual winner Vincenzo Nibali was starting at third favourite out at 11.00. So from favourite to third was 9.00 difference.
This year there is now only a spread of 2.37 covering the first four riders with Chris Froome starting favourite at 2.63, Nairo Quintana next at 3.50 and now Alberto Contador and Vincenzo Nibali are equal third favourite at 5.00. What’s interesting is that since yesterday Nibali has come down from 6.00 to 5.00, and Contador from 5.50 down to 5.00. Quintana has actually dropped back to 3.50. Out of those four I think Contador is the best value, I would have him starting as second favourite so at 5.00 that is good odds.
Updated: Now hours out from the start and Contador is back out to 6.00 and Nibali to 6.50.
Thibaut Pinot at 26.00, Tejay Van Garderen and Joaquin Rodriguez both at 41.00 are worthy of an outside bet, Australian Richie Porte will be supporting Chris Froome and starts at 67.00.
Green Jersey
The points classification has been a competition within the Tour de France since 1953, it’s one for the sprinters with points given for sprint finishes and intermediate sprints. Peter Sagan has dominated this contest for the last three years and will be gunning for his fourth green jersey award this year, Sagan starts at odds of 1.83, Alexander Kristoff is next at 4.33 with 2011 winner Mark Cavendish third favourite at 6.00. The top six is rounded out by John Degenkolb, Andre Greipel and Nacer Bouhanni.
At 13.00 John Degenkolb is worth backing.
King of the Mountains
The King of the Mountains winner can be a difficult one to pick as there are so many climbers at a similar level and getting an early lead can be as a result of being in a lucky break, last years winner for instance, Rafal Majka is only 18th favourite paying 41.00. With so many mountain finishes this year the favourite is Nairo Quintana at 4.50 with outright race favourite Chris Froome next at 9.00. Pierre Rolland and Alberto Contador are next at 10.00 and 13.00.
Yong Rider Classification
The young rider classification has been a competition within the Tour de France since 1975 and currently the eligibility is for riders under 26 years old, Nairo Quintana is still only 25 so he’s the overwhelming favourite at 1.50 to win, young french hopes Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) is next at 5.00 and Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale). Wilco Kelderman, Simon Yates and World Champion Michal Kwiatkowski round out the top six.
