Wahoo Fitness have announced yet another new product and will take on Garmin in the popular GPS cycle computer market. The ELEMNT (like Element but without the “e”) is a dedicated GPS enabled cycle computer that features ANT+, Bluetooth Smart (BTLE) and Wifi and will seamlessly connect with smartphone apps to configure the computer. The ELEMNT is compatible with existing ANT+ sensors on your bike and because it features BTLE is also compatible with Wahoo Fitness own Kickr indoor trainers including the recent Kickr Snap.
The ELEMNT appears to put a bit more emphasis on user experience and simplicity of set up. You can pair the device with your iOS or Android phone or tablet to quickly run through setup including rider details, screens and bike details and sensors. For Kickr users the ELEMNT supports trainer control.
Using a bike computer shouldn’t be the hardest part of your ride,” said Chip Hawkins, CEO of Wahoo Fitness. “We saw a need for a well-designed GPS-enabled cycling computer that simplified the riding experience rather than complicated it. We solved that need with the ELEMNT.
The ELEMNT has an innovative Quicklook LED display along the left and top edge, these can be programmed to speed, heart rate or power to provide quick feedback to the rider. No need to read the actual numbers if all the LED lights are on!
Other key features of the ELEMNT include full map support, track other riders, integration with third party platforms Strava, Training Peaks, RideWithGPS and others. Riders can receive text, email and call alerts while riding.
In terms of size the ELEMNT compares closest to the Garmin Edge 810 as pictured below. It’s slightly shorter, but a bit wider. In what maybe the only negative I see for this new device is it uses a different quarter turn mount to that used by Garmin units. The device will ship with it’s own out front mounts (two types) and a stem mount.
The Wahoo ELEMNT is listed at AUD499 and from the Wahoo Fitness press release appears to be shipping from late November.
