Zdenek STYBAR (EQS) Stage 6 winner

Zdenek Stybar (Etixx – Quick-Step) won another crash marred stage of the Tour de France winning Stage 6 solo after leader and teammate Tony Martin crashed heavily inside 1km to go taking down several other riders including Vincenzo Nibali, Nairo Quintana and Tejay Van Garderen. Chris Froome narrowly avoided going down escaping with a grazed knee trying to avoid the crash.

Zdenek Stybar made his winning move shortly after the crash and the sprinters led by Peter Sagan were unable to close the gap down, Peter Sagan added to his run of second places with Bryan Coquard in third and John Degenkolb in fourth.

Of the GC rivals caught up in the crash Nairo Quintana looked the worst but confirmed it was only a superficial wound.

“I had the doctor look at it; it looks like to be a superficial injury. The people at home can sleep easy,” said Quintana at the team bus, with his right elbow wrapped in gauze. “I hope tomorrow I don’t have any problems with the elbow, because it was a pretty hard blow. Right now, in the heat, I don’t feel anything wrong, but let’s see how it feels in the morning.”

Tony Martin suffered a fractured collarbone and will not start Stage 7, that means Chris Froome will wear the yellow jersey. The gaps to the rest of the GC contenders remains unchanged heading into Stage 7 which should be another stage for the pure sprinters. Saturdays Stage 8 finishes on the Mûr-de-Bretagne and should see a change in time gaps between the leaders.

There was a bit of an exchange between Chris Froome and Vincenzo Nibali about who caused the crash, with Nibali initially blaming Froome for swerving. Froome boarded the Astana team bus after the stage where the matter seemed to be resolved, both team mangers also getting involved.
