Unsafe Cycle Lane

In a sign of escalating tensions between cyclists and the NSW government, a group of cyclists have been spraying ‘Unsafe Cycle Lane’ markings on bike lanes across Sydney. Roads that have had bike lanes painted with the unsafe message include Greens Road and Moore Park Road in Paddington, and Doncaster Avenue in Kingsford. The signs have been painted on with white paint, using a stencil.

There have been various protests in Sydney since NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay and Transport Minister Andrew Constance decided to remove existing bike lanes on College Street before replacing them with a cycleway on Castlereagh Street. The tweet below was from the #cycleways4people protest early this month.

And thanks to twitter user @achuter for taking this shot of the ‘Unsafe Cycle Lane’ markings.

Sydney City Council has started removing the markings and said they were treated as graffiti, and would be referred to police.

The City has a program to investigate all shoulder lanes – where parking and cycle lanes run side by side – and to remark and redesign them as required,” – Sydney spokeswoman.
