2015 Trofeo Alfredo Binda Podium Lizzie Armitstead

Lizzie Armitstead won the Trofeo Alfredo Binda after outsprinting her rivals in a six-rider lead group and moving into the lead of the 2015 Women’s Road World Cup after the second round. Armitstead (Boels Dolmans) opened the final sprint from 300 metres out and held out current world champion Pauline Ferrand Prevot (Rabo Liv) who placed second with Anna Van Der Breggen(Rabo Liv) taking third.

The race was run on a hilly and demanding course north of Milan, starting on the shores of Lake Maggiore with a climb of the steep Cunardo climb and then onto four laps of a 17km circuit which had the tough Orino climb each lap. The first climb at Cunardo proved decisive with the bunch reduced to 25 riders at the front, the climb at Orino reduced the bunch further each lap.

Tiffany Cromwell (Velocio – SRAM) was the highest placed Australian in 11th place, Cromwell is also the highest placed Australian in the 2015 Women’s Road World Cup standings in 9th place.

The next race in the UCI Women Road World Cup is this Sunday’s Women’s Tour of Flanders.
